Iraq SITREP 2015-1-29-30_hi

Update of the situation in Syria and Iraq as of Nov. 15th

Here is an update on the situation in Syria and Iraq as of November 15th. The huge section of black/grey is ISIS and other forces like al-nusra. While the area they control is huge and the picture looks very disheartening, it is important to remember that much of that area is desert. The fighting is mostly focussed around a few key points, such as Kobani (the tiny yellow speck in the North of Syria to the Northeast of Aleppo). Click on the image to enlarge the map.

Maps of the Wars in Syria and Iraq

Here are a few maps visualizing the war in Syria and Iraq. They provide an interesting window into the way in which wars are conducted today. One thing that is immediately clear is that these wars are complex, with multiple rebel groups, tribal factions, pro-government groups, insurgents and foreign powers all engaging with each other in highly sophisticated operations across the region.

The following map was released in the last few days by The Institute for the Study of War:

The rest of these maps are from Thomas van Linge. Here is the situation in Iraq as of October 5, 2014.
